The Fifth Strain - Clairvoyants by Brady Moore {Book tour review}

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

I would like to say a huge thankyou to Love Books Tours and Brady Moore for gifting me a copy of this EBook in return for an honest review. I was on the book tour for the first book in this series and loved it so I was extremely excited to read the following book. I wanted to know what happened to Rion and the remaining Clairvoyants after the antics at his high school. What adventures were awaiting them? Click to read my review of the first book The fourth Kinetic: Clairvoyants

Kinetics. Readers. Prophets. Aurals. There were only supposed to be four strains of Clairvoyants who escaped from a lab with no memories of how they came to be. But that was before they discovered 17-year-old Rion Grean. From the moment he realized he could move objects with his mind, Rion never imagined a normal life. He had no idea how much everything would change the day his mother’s secrets came to light and she had to say goodbye.

That was the day he learned that he was not the only one with gifts. The day he learned about PSYRIIN, the militaristic force bent on the eradication of his kind. With a new face preparing his enemies for an even greater assault, Rion will once again be faced with difficult choices. Will he search for his mother or join the Clairvoyants to unite the long lost few in the war for their survival? As secrets unravel and he discovers a mysterious connection to a new strain, Rion will soon learn what it truly means to fight for family.

So I was not disappointed at all agreeing to join this tour, the sequel was just as feisty as the first book. This story was again filled with action, drama and emotions.

We visit with Rion after the battle at his high school, he and the other Clairvoyants are still trying to figure out how the Psyriin are doing in their pursuit of the Clairvoyants. As adversaries go the Psyriin are pretty terrifying. They seem to know so much about the Clairvoyants every moves, they are strong, powerful and will stop at nothing to catch their prey. A sinister group indeed!

I enjoyed reading more about the clairvoyants and their tight knit group, they were an unlikely bunch of people brought together by their gifts but they had a strong familial link to each other. Even Rion who knew nothing of them for most of his life, still has a unique bond to each of his fellow clairvoyants. I love this link that binds them together as it makes their fight so much more tense. They have a lot to lose.

Meeting the fifth strain in this book was a nice curve for the storyline, learning of their powers and the things they could do makes the adventure even more striking. It took the journey off into another direction and left me wondering what on earth could happen if they were ever discovered. There would be serious consequences if they fell into the hands of the enemy.

The book was explosive from beginning to end, plenty of action, fights, explosions, emotional upheaval and betrayal, I felt immersed in it all. In some parts it was still a little rushed, as in the first book, I think a bit more context and a slightly slower pace would round it out overall and make it easier to keep up with. However this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. The ending was such a twist and I cannot wait for the third instalment to find out what exactly this means for Rion and his family.

Does this sound like a book you may enjoy? I hope you add it to your TBR! Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
