Only you by Cathryn Grant [Blog tour review]

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for the amazing psychological thriller Only You by Cathryn Grant.

First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to Emma Welton at Damppebbles and Inkubator books for organising this blog tour and providing me with a copy of this book to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Only you will be published on 2nd May 2021.

Blurb

Hadley did a bad thing. Now she has to pay.

Hadley is one of those rare people who feels she's living the perfect life. She has a husband she loves, a charming daughter, and a job that is deeply fulfilling. Sometimes it almost seems like a fairytale.

Sure enough, little by little, things start to go wrong. There's the creepy guy from down the street who keeps staring at her teenage daughter, there's the strangely needy woman who moves in next door…

Just little wrinkles, but then Hadley's world is turned upside down when someone close to her is murdered. And Hadley begins to suspect that the killing is linked to something from her own past. A terrible secret she has never shared with anyone…

As she digs deeper, Hadley realises there is someone out there who knows what she did, someone who is planning to take her perfect life - and turn it into a perfect nightmare.

Only You - the stunning psychological thriller from the author of The Other Couple and The Guest.

My thoughts

Wow, I thought this story was such a clever twisted psychological thriller. It had me gripped all the way through. The prologue set the tone of the story right at the beginning, full of suspense and drama, it made me not want to put down the book to find out where the story was going to take me.

From the prologue the story begins to delicately build the charmed life of Hadley, her perfect husband Jonah and their equally perfect daughter Geneva. On the surface everything seems like the suburban dream but even from the start there seems to be an underlying tension for Hadley, clues and links to her past that make her life seem less perfect than we realise. The extra characters of Alice, Deborah, Kenny and Faith weave into the story and create a suspenseful, sometimes terrifying dynamic which becomes cleverly exposed as the story winds on.

Interwoven into Hadley's story are fantasy excerpts of the lives of Clementine and Camille, a strange dark and twisted fairytale which was confusing at the start as they didn't seem to have any roots within the story, however the more I read they fell into place and revealed a very interesting loop.

Cathryn has written a very interesting and clever complex book which sucked me into the darkness and left me desperate to find out more. Once the characters true natures began to reveal themselves I was hooked, I didn't want to stop reading and it gave me lots of moments to think about and try to unravel in my head before the reveal! And just when I thought it was complete... that epilogue!

Real life drama, gritty suspense, a twisted version of reality, magical darkness. This book had it all in a tightly woven web of deception and terror. I highly recommend you give it a read!
